Finally, most companies pay a decent differential for third shift work. I get home to see them all wake up and start their days (school, work, etc.) then I go to sleep. ![]() I eat dinner with my wife and older daughters put the 4 year old to bed and head off to work while they all sleep. I have a four year old daughter and third shift allows me to work while she is asleep and be there all day while she is awake. I've had the chance to change shifts but I decided to stick with third. You have to get our sense of humor and our sense of camaraderie. By that I mean you work as hard as the man next to you you're always on time and you rarely call out. Either you're a third-shifter or you're out. That being said, we don't tolerate laggards for very long. There is a very strong sense of teamwork and everyone drives their co-workers to excel and be part of the team. We're allowed freedoms that you cannot have on the day shifts (music in the warehouse, snacks while working, etc.). ![]() The atmosphere is a lot lighter and less corporate than the day shifts. Our bosses are the best in the company and are there right alongside us. Our workload is very clearly defined (we load and unload trucks) and deadline driven. Third shift workers, on the other hand, get the job done without any of the b/s of first or second shift. Second shift workers just seem to slide right by and are not too productive in my company. Like many others have said, first shift employees are all about getting noticed by upper management and spend half their time politicking, gabbing, socializing or attending meetings. Without a doubt the best people you will ever find work third shift. I've been working third shift at my company for four years (9pm to 6am).
